What competitive forces have challenged the movie industry? What problems have these forces created? What changes have these problems caused the movie and television studios to make? New market entrants and substitute products are the two main competitive forces affecting the movie industry. The traditional outlets for movie viewing, theaters, cable networks, and rental locations are all challenged by the new age of the digital industry. The traditional outlets provided a simpler and more productive means for the industry to get compensated for their efforts. The digital means of using web sites to download from the privacy of your own home has made things more convenient to the consumer but is allowing for there to be infringement on the financial compensation to the production companies.
There is a limit to the capability of controlling these activities which has caused some distributors to enter into contracts with some digital networks such as YouTube. YouTube is helping to develop a revenue-sharing model with creators to develop a digital fingerprinting technology that will help control the unauthorized use of copyright protected material. Describe the impact of disruptive technology on the companies discussed in the case study? Disruptive technologies caused by technological changes can have different effects on different companies depending on how they handle the changes. Some companies create the disruptions and do very well. Other companies learn about the disruptions and adapt very well. Other companies are destroyed by the changes because they do not respond well to change with any efficiency and effectiveness. How have the movie studios responded to YouTube? What is the goal of the response? What can the movie studios learn from the music industry’s dealings with digital music and copyright infringement? If you want to blame someone for the plight of the movie industry then the computer hardware and software manufacturers should be the first stop. They provide cheap and easy to use tools that allow the consumer to bypass the traditional methods of viewing with ease. In the beginning the movie industry tried to put up a good fight much as the music industry fought several years ago. This was a long hard losing battle, so in the interest of both the industry and the consumer many production companies are trying to seek a solution that meets the demands of both the industry and the consumer.
Should movie companies continue to use You Tube to promote their new films? Why or why not? YouTube remains the most popular video website. The movie industry should continue to work with YouTube to find ways to use the site even if for only promotional purposes. The average person would rather see a quality production that a second-rate clip. By taking proactive measures rather than being reactive to the challenges the movie industry will prosper.Go to Youtube.com and search for videos from your favorite movies or television shows. What do you see? Do you see any advertisements attached to the video? Do you think this is an effective way to advertise? Why or why not? Illegally viewing copyrighted material without there being compensation to the people responsible for creating the material is wrong and that should be understood and respected by the consumer. Advertising in the source of revenue for most websites so you will find advertisements attached to just about every video clip that has been stored on YouTube. The advertisements can be very productive in getting the consumer to utilize the traditional methods for movie viewing.Case Study 4
What concepts in the chapter are illustrated in this case? Who are the stakeholders in this case? Responsibility – accepting the potential costs, duties, and obligations for decisions. Google must assume the bulk of responsibility for securing the data and ensuring it’s used only for authorized purposes. Accountability – a feature of systems and social institutions: It means that mechanisms are in place to determine who took responsible action. Again, Google must ensure accountability of its systems and those responsible for creating and maintaining the system Liability – a feature of political systems in which a body of laws is in place that permits individuals to recover the damages done to them by other actors, systems, or organizations. Federal and state governments must pass and enforce laws protecting medical records. Stakeholders in this case include patients and health-care consumers, doctors and other medical professionals,
insurance companies, health-care related businesses like pharmaceutical companies, governments, and storage providers like Google, Microsoft and Revolution Health Group. What are the problems with America’s current medical record keeping system? How would electronic medical records alleviate these problems? Current records are paper-based, making effective communications and access difficult. The current system for recording and storing medical information makes it difficult, if not impossible, to systematically examine and share the data. We keep detailed records of every doctor’s visit and medication, just like you do for every tax deduction, maybe even in the same shoebox, but this isn’t efficient when changing doctors or if you are on vacation. What management, organization, and technology factors are most critical to the creation and development of electronic medical records? Data quality issues within the product inventory and customer billing databases, resulting in poor efficiency of the system.
There is a probability of error that can be caused by lack of structure within the organization at data collection points. The company must continue to consider both the business and IT infrastructure ecosystems within which it operates and make sound decisions about what products to build on. What are the pros and cons of electronic patient records? Do you think the concerns over digitizing our medical records are valid? Why or why not? As with any new technology there are pros and cons. Electronic storage of medical records, treatments, surgeries, family history and medication history can be very useful when there are changes in your living situation or if you were to be the victim of an accident. It would certainly reduce the number of people that either receive the wrong treatment or are denied treatment due to the unavailability of their past medical history. The negative side of having this information stored is that there are some people that will take your information an exploit it for numerous reasons. Privacy becomes a big question for most people with the current level of identity theft it does make people a bit more apprehensive. Should people entrust Google with their electronic medicals records? Why or why not? Google and Microsoft are each taking the first steps toward the burgeoning, and lucrative, industry of electronic health-records management. This is a virtually untapped market which is surprising considering how much of our other personal records are stored in databases at many levels of our
government. Having your medical records in an accessible, searchable and consistent format is certainly appealing. But you, and your doctor, would also become a magnet for advertisers offering services based on your particular medical history.If you were in charge of designing an electronic medical record keeping system, what are some features you would include? What are features you would avoid? At a minimum, the record keeping system should allow for immediate electronic information exchange between doctors, saving time on taking patients’ history and money on tests or X-rays that may have already been performed. Discontinue handwritten prescriptions with an electronic network linking doctors and pharmacies. This would reduce mistakes, save time wasted on phone calls back and forth and enable automated warnings of drug interactions and drug sensitivities. Facilitate “data mining” for information about new or existing treatments. Security would have to be of the utmost importance due to the sensitive nature of some of the material that is part of medical records.
