Are some ways of knowing more likely than others to lead to truth
Prescribed essay by Drew Davey
I think that every way of knowing is important in find truth. It is truly hard to determine which way is the best way to find it. I suppose that it depends on what kind of truth you are looking for. Some times that can be an even more difficult question, but we must answer it to answer the first question.
Like I said to answer the first question we need to answer the second. I say this because how can one answer a question has other ways to look at it For example I think that for every way of knowing there is a truth and for every truth a way of knowing. This causes me to wonder if there can be more than one way of knowing for one truth.
If it is to be interpreted like that then I do not think I know if there is a better way of knowing that is above all the rest. However I do think that there is a better way for certain circumstances. If one is looking to find what it is that drives them than emotion is a better way of knowing then Sense Perception will most likely lead to an untrue conclusion. Emotion would probably lead to the truth of the question. Just as emotion is not the best way to solving a puzzle.
This does not really answer the question of is there a better way of knowing. I think that the best way figure this out is by matching the ways of knowing with the type of truth that can be looked for. This conclusion in itself came reason so I think that I can count this as a win for reason in the area of problem solving.
First let us look at personal truths. Such truths that can be found in questions like should I marry this person or is this what I really want Like I said earlier emotion is a good way to find this truth. It is not always accurate because some do not really know what they want. I feel that because it is more reliable than not emotion gets one point. Sense perception can do very little in this matter. Occasionally one can get some feed back from other using their eye sight. This can sometimes get one a truth but in this matter the others views on the matter can make up for times when they don??™t know what they want. In the end it is not very reliable. It seems to me that it deserves one fourth of a point. Language can most certainly help in this in this matter. However, it only really helps if two people are involved other wise it falls under emotion. This earns a fifty percent because it is quite reliable but not spot on.
Next I there is the question that pertains to language. Let??™s say that there is an item that you can not identify. How it is that one can identify it. Maybe we should turn to reason. One can look at an object and make observations and make a connection with something that one already know. In order to do this sense perception is needed. So I think that they both get one fourth of a point. Emotion can not really do anything in this situation. Emotion does not get any points because there is no way to identify any object with emotion. Now language is one that can really help here. Language can tell us what it is in a society and if can also tell us what it does.
In the next situation let??™s say that there is gas that is escaping. What would be a good way to find the truth Can reason really help I don??™t think so; there is no way to know that gas is escaping if you are trying to reason through it. We tend to run into the same problem with language and emotion. That only leaves sense perception. If one walks into the room where the gas is escaping then they can smell the gas and then know to fix it or leave the area.
The last one to look at is reason. Let??™s say that there is a puzzle that someone is trying to do but what would they use. Emotion and language is pretty much useless in this situation because that person does not need to know what it is or what it is that they feel when they do the puzzle. Sense perception and reason have to work together to reach their goal. However, sense perception helps only a little so it does get some but it does not solve the puzzle. Reason allows that person to think through the puzzle and find the solution so I feel that it gets a full point.
To be analytical about this topic it seems that reason does win. In the end reason got a 2.25, sense perception got a 1.75, language got a 1.50 and emotion got one single point. I really do feel that reason can be used in more situations than the others. I do not think that it is better than the others. I think that they are all useful in there own ways. Emotion however seems useless to me. It really only tells what it is that one already knows. It is not really useless because it does help ones self better but in real world situations it is not a good way to find truth in things
This is still just my opinion and even though I scored the ways of knowing does not mean that it is right. Like I said earlier that I used reason to get this conclusion. The conclusion said that reason was the better of the four. End the end what does that mean. It really means nothing at all. It means nothing because I used reason before I tested. There may have been another way, by using all the ways of knowing to find the best way to find the best way of knowing; if that makes sense. Then again I used reason to come to that conclusion. I do think that reason is the best way to find truth but in the end I don??™t really think that there is a way to find out for certain because in order to do so one needs to use one of the four ways of knowing. So I would like to end this by saying that this is not a question that can be answered with an opinion.
